Anita Vega’s Journey from Overwhelmed to On the Runway
When Anita Vega first set out to sell her beadwork online, she created a website but quickly found herself overwhelmed by the technical challenges. Tasks like search engine optimization and learning how to drive traffic to her site became barriers that made it difficult to reach customers. She knew her work had potential, but the online side of the business felt out of reach.
Everything changed when she connected with the IDRS Acorn Project through the Uplift Maker’s Program, a special training and support initiative offered in partnership with Etsy. As a member of the Indigenous Artisans Collective, Anita received targeted support designed specifically for Native makers working to grow their online presence.
With the help of the program, Anita transitioned to Etsy, a platform that made it easier for her to reach customers and manage an online shop without needing advanced technical skills. The IDRS staff worked closely with her, guiding her step by step, helping her set up her Etsy shop properly, and showing her how to make the most of the platform’s built in tools. What once felt confusing and overwhelming became manageable and even exciting.
Once her Etsy shop was up and running, Anita began receiving orders, allowing her business to start generating income. But the most exciting milestone arrived when she was invited to collaborate with Indigenous fashion designer Tierra Alysiav on a special project that incorporated Anita’s beadwork into original fashion apparel. Their collaborative piece debuted at the Indigenous Fashion Collective gala at the iconic Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles this past October. Seeing her work on the runway was a moment of pride and possibility, one that Anita will never forget.
Through it all, Anita says “The most valuable part of working with the IDRS Acorn project was the personal support. The training offered through IDRS is strong, but it was the one-on-one technical assistance that made the biggest difference. In a world where you can find tutorials on almost anything, having someone who can sit beside you and guide you personally is what helped me move from struggling to succeeding.”
Today, Anita continues to grow her business with confidence and creativity as part of the Indigenous Artisans Collective, knowing she has the support of the IDRS team behind her. Her journey shows what can happen when talent, determination, and the right support come together.
